Gorgeous vintage Celtic brooch. This Book of Kells TARA WARE brooch was made in Dublin, Ireland. The inspiration for the design was taken from the Book of Kells illuminated manuscript. It features birds and snakes. The Book of Kells originated on the holy island of Iona on the west coast of Scotland. It was then taken to the Abbey of Kells in Ireland where it remained for most of the Medieval period. It can now be viewed at Trinity College, Dublin.
The brooch is made of copper and is painted with enamel in blue, red and yellow. The back features a c clasp brooch pin and also a hook so that it can also be worn as a pendant. The condition is very good and the brooch has a marvelous shine.
The brooch weighs 15 grams. It measures 4.2 cm in diameter. Presented in a beautiful satin drawstring bag.
