Beautiful Damascene enamel pearl brooch. Toledo damascene from Spain.
Measures 5cm x 3cm diameter. This has traditional damascene enamel in black and white on goldtone metal and features two faux pearls. Two flowers and leaves. This is a very neat piece and a lovely example of damascene. It probably dates from the 1970s.
Presented in a satin drawstring bag
There is some wear to the plating on the back of the brooch but the front is in very good condition.
Damascening is the art of inlaying different metals into one another—typically, gold or silver into a darkly oxidized steel background—to produce intricate patterns similar to niello. The English term comes from a perceived resemblance to the rich tapestry patterns of damask silk.
